Enemy of the State
A sharp social satire that creeps up on us with the same relevance today as in Ibsen’s time, and gives us a delicious kick out of our comfort zone.
A world-class meeting of masters
It is with immense pride that we invite you to Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People at Bruddet Fjæreheia in the summer of 2026. Here you can experience the world’s most frequently performed playwright, second only to Shakespeare, on Northern Europe’s most unique and breathtaking stage. There is a reason Ibsen is the world’s most famous Norwegian: he is as beloved, relevant and provocative today as he was in his furious work nearly 200 years ago. And Bruddet Fjæreheia provides a spectacular natural arena for the drama, making the experience truly special and unforgettable.
I want to create An Enemy of the People at Bruddet Fjæreheia that is vital, deliciously captivating and disturbingly topical, true to Ibsen's sharp contrasts, but with a visual language that speaks directly to today's audience.Artistic director Hanne Tømta
Sharp, hyper‑relevant and wickedly funny
When the truth becomes dangerous, who dares to speak it out loud? Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People is an intense, thriller‑like drama that hits our turbulent times just as hard as when it was written. Democratic values, freedom of expression and a free press are under pressure. Truth is for sale – in high politics and perhaps also in local communities and circles of friends. And do we dare to stand up to “the others”, to the majority at work, in the schoolyard or in our own family?
A delicious thriller
Doctor Stockmann discovers that the pride of the town – the new spa baths – is polluted. He tries to warn the press and the politicians, but they, and the townspeople, turn against him. The play asks burning contemporary questions about morality, power and how far you are willing to go for what you believe in. And does the majority always have right on its side?
At its core, An Enemy of the People is about the choices we make every single day, and the consequences of holding on to our principles. Do you dare to speak up? Who gets to decide in the end? And how deep do our democratic convictions really run?
